What you need
Hardware, software and accounts needed to self-host Qwest.
The server
Section titled “The server”| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 2 cores, x86-64 (Intel or AMD) | 4 cores |
| Memory (RAM) | 2 GB | 4 GB or more |
| Disk | 20 GB free | 20 GB + room for your uploads (or cloud storage) |
| System | Anything that runs Docker | Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS |
Uploads are the part that grows. A team that shares videos and 3D models can fill 100 GB within months. A team that mostly writes docs and plans tasks stays under a few GB.
Software
Section titled “Software”- Docker with Docker Compose. Each server guide shows how to install it.
- Nothing else: the database, the web server and the backup tools are all included.
Accounts
Section titled “Accounts”- Your Qwest license key, from the email you got after buying. Without one, Qwest runs in evaluation with 3 seats.
- Optional: a domain name, to put Qwest online.
- Optional: a Tailscale account, to keep it private.
- Optional: a bucket for cloud storage.
Internet
Section titled “Internet”The server needs the internet once, to activate the license, and then only to download updates. It can even be activated with no internet at all, from another device. See Activate your license.
